President-elect Donald Trump will be inaugurated as the 47th president of the United States at noon, on Monday, January 20, 2025, taking the oath of office to formally kick off his second term in the White House.
The 20th Amendment states that a president’s four-year term ends at noon on Jan. 20, and the president-elect is sworn in shortly after. The inauguration marks the official transfer of presidential power, with the executive branch changing hands from the Biden administration to the Trump administration.
Due to expected freezing temperatures and high winds, the inuaguration will be held inside the United States Capitol rotunda in Washington, D.C. It will be the 60th U.S. presidential inauguration and the second inauguration of Trump as U.S. president, marking the commencement of his second and final non-consecutive term as U.S. president, the term of JD Vance as the vice president, and the only non-consecutive re-inauguration for a U.S. president after the second inauguration of Grover Cleveland in 1893. It is also the first presidential inauguration to take place indoors since Ronald Reagan’s public ceremony in 1985. Thousands of people who had tickets to attend the event outdoors will not be able to fit into the new indoor configuration. Trump has however, encouraged his supporters to instead attend a live viewing of the event at Washington’s Capital One Arena, stating that he will come to the arena after the inauguration at the Capitol.

The theme of this year’s ceremonies is “Our Enduring Democracy: A Constitutional Promise.”
The inaugural ceremonies of the president-elect and vice president-elect are planned by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies. Led this year by Sen. Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat from Minnesota, the committee oversees eight events on Inauguration Day:
- the procession to the Capitol;
- the vice president’s swearing-in ceremony;
- the president’s swearing-in ceremony;
- the inaugural address;
- the honorary departure of the outgoing president and vice president;
- the signing ceremony, during which the new president signs nominations, memoranda, proclamations or executive orders;
- the inaugural luncheon;
- the pass in review, during which the president and vice president review military troops;
- and the presidential parade, which will take place at Capital One arena in downtown Washington due to the cold.
Inaugural balls are held at various venues before and after the inaugural ceremonies.
Pre-inauguration Rally
On the eve of his inauguration, President-elect Donald Trump staged a campaign-style rally in frigid Washington, where he and his supporters celebrated his win.
As he has been signaling for weeks, Trump is expected to sign a torrent of executive actions on Monday to make good on his campaign promises.
“The American people have given us their trust, and in return, we’re going to give them the best first day, the biggest first week and the most extraordinary first 100 days of any presidency in American history,” Trump said.
Trump vowed to repeal “every radical and foolish executive order of the Biden administration” within hours of assuming the presidency.
