Bishop Dr. Mike Okonkwo, born Chukwuweike Michael Okonkwo on September 6, 1945, in Ogbunike, Anambra State, Nigeria, is the Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM). He has dedicated over 30 years to Christian ministry, establishing TREM as a significant Pentecostal denomination with numerous branches worldwide.
Early Life and Education
Mike Okonkwo’s early education spanned various regions in Nigeria. He began at the Salvation Army Primary School in Enugu, then attended Ijero Baptist Primary School in Lagos, and completed his primary education at St. Mark’s Primary School in Offa, Kwara State. For secondary education, he attended Mayflower College in Ikenne, Ogun State, and Merchants of Light Grammar School in Oba, Anambra State, graduating in 1963.
Career and Ministry
After his secondary education, Okonkwo worked briefly at the Nigerian Ports Authority in 1964 before joining the African Continental Bank. His career was interrupted by the Nigerian Civil War, during which he served in the Nigerian Army. Post-war, he returned to banking but soon felt a divine calling. In 1970, he committed his life to Christ and joined the United Church of Christ, where he was ordained as a minister in 1971. His passion for evangelism led him to establish several church branches in Lagos. In January 1981, he founded The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), which has since expanded to over 180 branches globally.
Leadership and Influence
Bishop Okonkwo has held significant positions within Nigeria’s Christian community, including serving as the National President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) from 1998 to 2007. He has been instrumental in promoting Christian unity and interfaith dialogue, contributing to national reconciliation efforts.
Philanthropy and Achievements
Beyond his ministerial duties, Bishop Okonkwo is known for his philanthropic endeavors. He founded the Empowerment for the Less Privileged (ELP) Foundation, focusing on education, vocational training, and healthcare services for underprivileged communities. His peace-building efforts include mediating communal conflicts, notably in his hometown of Ogbunike. In recognition of his contributions, he has received numerous awards, including the national honor of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).
Personal Life
Bishop Mike Okonkwo is married to Bishop Peace Okonkwo, and they have a daughter named Uche. Together, they have built a strong partnership in ministry, with Peace Okonkwo also playing a significant role in TREM’s leadership.

At 78, Bishop Okonkwo has much to be proud of, including his over 30 years of committed service to God and the many individuals he has helped mentor in similar paths. His leadership and dedication continue to inspire many within and beyond the Christian community.
