In spite of the fact that he is now a highly regarded theologian, Anthony Rogers began his career behind bars.
The streets were filled with me as I ran about. Eventually, I was arrested for stealing a car, and I was sentenced to prison,” he says in a video of his account of the incident. “In spite of appearances, it was quite fortuitous. One of the inmates who I shared a room with was a self-proclaimed worshiper of the devil, and this individual had a strong objection to the authority of the Bible. He persisted in assaulting it.
To begin, Anthony studied the Bible in order to gain an understanding of the reasons for the cellmate’s vehement opposition to it. Next, he read the Bible because he found it increasingly interesting. While he was incarcerated, the only thing he could do was read his Bible out loud.
“It wasn’t until I heard somebody proclaim the gospel of Christ, that he was the atoning sacrifice for my sins, that God freely accepts me in his Son and forgives my sins on his account, that I turned to him in faith, and everything changed from that point on,” recalls Anthony. “It was then that everything changed.”

By 1993, he had converted to Christianity. He continued to read and study the Bible, and without anyone’s knowledge, he eventually became a theologian.
“I’m thinking about what hope I have that I can be forgiven, and I read not only of a God who is holy and angry with the wicked, but who is limitless in his grace and his loving kindness,” said Anthony. “I’m thinking about what hope I have that I can be forgiven.” It came to my attention that each of these judgments included, within them, some indication of the grace of God.
Upon his release from jail, Anthony obtained employment at a restaurant, and it was there that he first became acquainted with the Jewish lady who would eventually become his wife. Her rabbi was unable to provide answers to the questions that she continued to ask Anthony.
Following the couple’s marriage and the birth of their children, he went on to enroll in the divinity program at Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, from which he ultimately graduated in 2018. His daughter was diagnosed with a rare condition, which necessitated the family’s continued residence in the United States. Initially, he intended to pursue a career as a missionary.
He went on to become an ordained preacher and is currently working with Metanoia Prison Ministries as a regional director and administrator. His work has been published in a variety of publications, including magazines, websites, and theological journals. He has also contributed to a number of books, including Our God is Triune.

He and his wife are the parents of four children.
