4 1-2 Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan River, being urged by the Spirit out into the barren wastelands of Judea, where Satan tempted him for forty days. He ate nothing all that time and was very hungry.
3 Satan said, “If you are God’s Son, tell this stone to become a loaf of bread.”
4 But Jesus replied, “It is written in the Scriptures, ‘Other things in life are much more important than bread!’”
5 Then Satan took him up and revealed to him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time; 6-7 and the devil told him, “I will give you all these splendid kingdoms and their glory—for they are mine to give to anyone I wish—if you will only get down on your knees and worship me.”
8 Jesus replied, “We must worship God, and him alone. So it is written in the Scriptures.”
9-11 Then Satan took him to Jerusalem to a high roof of the Temple and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say that God will send his angels to guard you and to keep you from crashing to the pavement below!”
12 Jesus replied, “The Scriptures also say, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to a foolish test.’”
13 When the devil had ended all the temptations, he left Jesus for a while and went away
[Luke 4:1-13  TLB]
Introduction
Jesus was not tempted so that the Father could determine the Son’s character and ability, for the Father had already approved the Son.
21 Then one day, after the crowds had been baptized, Jesus himself was baptized; and as he was praying, the heavens opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove settled upon him, and a voice from heaven said, “You are my much loved Son, yes, my delight. (Luke 3:22  TLB)
Nor was He tempted to give Satan a chance to defeat Him, for Satan probably did not even want this confrontation, knowing that Jesus could overcome his every tactic.
Jesus was tempted so that He could personally experience temptation and to also prepare Him to be our High Priest.
16 We all know he did not come as an angel but as a human being—yes, a Jew. 17 And it was necessary for Jesus to be like us, his brothers, so that he could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God, a Priest who would be both merciful to us and faithful to God in dealing with the sins of the people. 18 For since he himself has now been through suffering and temptation, he knows what it is like when we suffer and are tempted, and he is wonderfully able to help (Heb 2:16-18  TLB)
14 But Jesus the Son of God is our great High Priest who has gone to heaven itself to help us; therefore let us never stop trusting him. 15 This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses since he had the same temptations we do, though he never once gave way to them and sinned. 16 So let us come boldly to the very throne of God and stay there to receive his mercy and to find grace to help us in our times of need
(Heb 4:14-16  TLB)
and to show us how we can overcome the devil
1. By the Holy Spirit  (v. 1)
2. The Word of God (v. 4).
Lets Classify His Temptation
1. Physical Needs
3 Satan said, “If you are God’s Son, tell this stone to become a loaf of bread.”
4 But Jesus replied, “It is written in the Scriptures, ‘Other things in life are much more important than bread! [Luke 4: 3 – 5  TLB]
In the first temptation, Satan wanted Jesus to use His divine powers to meet His own needs outside of the will of God. It was a question of putting immediate needs ahead of eternal purposes.
2. Glory and Dominion
So it is written in the Scriptures. [Luke 4: 5 – 8  TLB]
In the next temptation, Satan asked for the worship that belongs only to God (“I will be like the Most High” – Isa 14:14), offering Jesus all the kingdoms of this world in return for Etetnal Slavery. It was actually an opportunity for Jesus to escape the cross, but He said no. Don’t accept the Short Cuts of the devil on your road to actualizing you God given destiny on the earth.
3. Foolish Showmanship
9-11 Then Satan took him to Jerusalem to a high roof of the Temple and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say that God will send his angels to guard you and to keep you from crashing to the pavement below!”
12 Jesus replied, “The Scriptures also say, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to a foolish test. [Luke 4: 9 – 12 TLB]
In the next temptation, Satan dared Jesus to test the Father’s Word by jumping off the temple; and he backed up his dare with a wrong application of   Ps 91:11-12 – 11 For he orders his angels to protect you wherever you go. 12 They will steady you with their hands to keep you from stumbling against the rocks on the trail.
The anointing is not for showmanship, nor is it for taking foolish decisions/test and expecting God to show up.
Empowered by the Holy Spirit, Jesus used the “sword of the Spirit” (Eph 6:17) to defeat the tempter. Jesus did not use His divine powers to win the victory; He used the same spiritual weapons that any of us can use, if we will yield to Him.
13 But remember this—the wrong desires that come into your life aren’t anything new and different. Many others have faced exactly the same problems before you. And no temptation is irresistible. You can trust God to keep the temptation from becoming so strong that you can’t stand up against it, for he has promised this and will do what he says. He will show you how to escape temptation’s power so that you can bear up patiently against it.   (1 Cor 10:13  TLB).
