Pope Francis, 88, has been hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli University Hospital since February 14, 2025, with a severe case of double pneumonia. His illness has been characterized by critical stages, such as severe respiratory insufficiency and early-stage renal failure. As of March 8, he was still in the hospital, where he continued to rest and work from his bed while getting recommended therapies such as motor physiotherapy and respiratory therapy.
Despite his health issues, Pope Francis has kept his pastoral duties. He issued a letter of solidarity to participants in the Italian Movement for Life’s pilgrimage, highlighting the need of safeguarding human life at all stages. In addition, he wrote a sermon for a special mass honoring volunteers, which Cardinal Michael Czerny gave in his absence.
The Vatican has stated that the Pope prays, sleep , and works from his hospital bed. His prognosis remains guarded, and his recovery process is likely to be gradual.
Pope Francis’ health has been a source of worry in recent years. He has chronic lung damage from a prior lung excision and is prone to episodes of influenza and bronchitis. In addition, due to knee difficulties and sciatica, he usually uses a wheelchair, walker, or cane.
The entire Catholic community continues to pray and support Pope Francis’ recovery, praying that he will return to full health and active ministry.
