There is a great difference between unity and uniformity, note that true spiritual unity comes from within and a product of the heart, while uniformity is just an outward way of being alike. Our scriptural focus for today states – Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose. Knowing fully well the dangers of allowing disunity to grow in the church, Apostle Paul encourages the Philippian church to see their unity in Christ as a source of his own joy and happiness. His desire is to see the brethren work towards achieving unity on the basis of love, having one mind and purpose, not division and rivalry.
It is clear that there was great disagreements going on in the Philippian church, which were capable of destroying the unity and purpose of the church. The solution to this problem cannot come by using Rules and Threats, but can only be solved when their hearts are Right with Christ and with each other.
Similar problems, if not greater abound in the church today and we will not achieve any solution if we keep insisting on rules and threats as against promoting unity of purpose on the basis of divine love. The root cause of disunity, division, rivalry etc, in the church is Selfishness, and selfishness is a byproduct of Pride and Inferiority Complex. Note that any believer that always puts himself/herself above others will not live a joyful life and cannot be a source of joy and happiness to others. The secret of true joy and happiness in the church as Christ desires, irrespective of conflicting circumstances and ideas is Singleness of Mind and Purpose, that is based on Gods kind of Love.
