Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. {Phil 2:3 NLT}
It is the mind or thought or the motive that characterizes our actions and inaction as good or bad before God, so let the principles of scripture be the basis for your actions and inactions. Our scriptural focus for today states – Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Apostle Paul addresses two value systems that should not be in anyway associated with believers in our daily conduct;
1. Selfishness (Selfish ambition)
2. Eye service (Always seeking to impress others)
These two wrong value systems are the actual channels the devil uses to fight unity and harmony in families, churches and the society at large. They are equally listed as manifestations of the sinful nature in Gal 5:20. Such values should not be encouraged among believer, rather we should resist it through acts of humility. The virtue of humility seeks to help believers estimate themselves according to the revealed truth of the scriptures and not to have an over blotted image of ourselves. It is also the willingness to take the place which we ought to take both in the sight of God and men. This will enable believers to lower the estimation of their personal importance and character and be willing to take up lowly and humble duties that will be primarily for the benefit of others wherever they find themselves. Thinking of others as being better than yourself is not about humiliating yourself, nor is it about superiority or being more talented than you, rather its about our New Nature in Christ as believers which loves seeing others’ as worthy of being given the best treatment that is available.
In serving others, You serve the purpose of Christ
